Joan Burton was not only an amazing woman and significant contributor to the Ontario Workplace Health Coalition (OWHC) but she was a life-long learner herself. Joan was a lead author of the World Health Organization's Healthy Workplace Framework and was awarded the prestigious Canadian Workplace Wellness Pioneer Award in 2003. Sadly, Joan passed away March 1st, 2014 following a struggle with cancer. Each year the OWHC holds a day of learning in her honour.
And we have some fabulous speakers lined up - check out our video!
This year's keynote speaker will be Lauren Bernardi from Bernardi Human Resources Law. Lauren will discuss the legal requirements for creating a psychologically safe workplace. Next, we will hear from the Canadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) about the recent launch of a new workplace tool called StressAssess. They will walk us through the new web platform tool and survey wizard that helps organizations go through the steps'learn, organize, assess, change, and evaluate'in the journey to improve workplace health.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Learn about and know how to use the StressAssess dashboard to plan, create, and organize a workplace stress survey to identify and address psychosocial hazards that affect the health of staff in your organization
- Understand the legal requirements regarding psychologically safe and healthy workplaces
- Share practical ideas and network with different stakeholders with an interest in creating safe and healthy workplaces
Stay afterward for networking while you enjoy a complimentary lunch.

And..... HOLD THE DATE to attend our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November 21 where we have confirmed Dr. Martin Shain to be our keynote speaker! Dr. Shain, a criminologist and social scientist, has written ground-breaking reports such as the 2010's Perfect Legal Storm, which led to the development and 2013 release of the Canadian Standard CSA Z1003, 'Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.' His more recent book (2016) 'The Careful Workplace' notes that the Standard has had limited effect being implemented as a Human Resource initiative and recommends that we need to pursue "careful workplaces" through a health and safety framework.
